As we begin another year of shining the spotlight on the history of my people, I am moved to jot a few lines down. It’s another year when various organisations and individuals participate in a myriad of activities to commemorate, celebrate and often to discover the history of the black race. I hate the word “coloured”, so I won’t even go there.
When you are a proud black woman like me, you don’t need a specially selected month of the year to celebrate black history. This is because I celebrate black history every day of my life.
Every time I rise when others expect me to be defeated, I celebrate black history!
Every time I smile when others expect me to cry, I celebrate black history!
Every time I use my voice to stand up against injustices, big or ‘small’, I celebrate black history!
Yes, my life is a celebration of black history and those pioneers who opened doors for me. I am proud to state that I have a ‘conscious bias’ and am determined to shine my light wherever I go. I intend to be remembered as someone who used her life for the upliftment and empowerment of others who look and feel like I do.
This is why I advocate for the building of bridges between cultures, views, lifestyles and most importantly people. Not walls!!!
We are all the same, whether we believe it or not. The colour of our skin is only skin deep, if that. On the inside, we are the same. When we come to accept this, we will join forces to build bridges. Not walls!!!
Why not use our lives to be celebrations of the building of bridges in our little corner of the world?
Just think, the world would be such a better place for ourselves and for future generations if we built bridges, not walls.
